About

Hana Rutka is an independent contemporary dance artist living as a grateful guest on the unceded, ancestral territories of the Musqueum, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh first nations.

She began her early training at Canada’s National Ballet School in Toronto, where she performed works by Jiří Kylián, James Kudelka, and Rudi van Dantzig.

She continued her studies at Modus Operandi in Vancouver, and completed additional programs at institutions across the U.K., France, and the U.S., including the Central School of Ballet (London), École Supérieure de Danse de Cannes, and the School of American Ballet (New York).

As a freelance dancer, Hana has worked with a range of choreographers and collaborators, such as Idan Cohen, Gail Lotenberg, Rachel Maddock, Jill Hennis, and James Gnam, and has appeared in productions with Ne. Sans, Voirelia, LINK Dance Foundation, Plastic Orchid Factory, and Vancouver Opera.

Hana has trained extensively with certified Laban Movement Analyst and somatic movement educator Helen Walkley and continues to evolve as a dance artist by augmenting her dance training through workshops and intensives in Countertechnique, Axis Syllabus, and contact improvisation, to name a few.

Hana is currently on the board of the Training Society of Vancouver, a not-for profit organization providing professional and pre-professional dance technique training.

In addition to her performance work, Hana is a certified STOTT PILATES®  Instructor, and maintains an ongoing interest in somatic practices as part of her creative movement research.
