Proximity is a dance trio that premiered on April 3, 2022, at the Scotiabank Dance Centre’s Open Stage 2. Created and performed by Rachel Maddock, Hana Rutka, and Damian Kai Norman, with an original score by Dean Thiessen, the piece investigates the shifting nature of closeness and connection during the pandemic era.

Using a dramatic 30-foot piece of white poly‑satin fabric as both barrier and playground, the dancers navigated the complex topography of space and isolation. Proximity became a beautifully visual and emotional study of how our bodies—and our relationships—adapt when distance becomes unavoidable.
